On the 13th of January 2025, the Akwa Ibom State Gender-Based Violence Management Committee, in collaboration with the Coalition Against GBV, successfully organized her annual ‘Walk for Love’ campaign at the Amphitheater, Ibom Plaza, Uyo. The event brought together stakeholders, advocates, and community members to amplify the urgent message of ending gender-based violence (GBV) in the state.
The Coordinator, Office of the First Lady and Chairpersonof the Akwa Ibom State Gender-Based Violence Management Committee, Lady Helen Eno Obareki, ably represented by the Secretary Emem Ette Esq, set the tone with a powerful opening address. She cautioned citizens against engaging in violence, especially human trafficking, child prostitution, rape, physical, verbal, economic and emotional abuse, abandonment of dependents without financial sustenance, and spousal battery, amongst others. The Coordinator reiterated the State Government’s unwavering stance against such acts and zero-tolerance policy toward GBV and its commitment to ensuring justice for victims.
The event featured a compelling drama presentation by the Ghen Ghen Arts group, which vividly depicted the devastating consequences of GBV. Through their performance, they drove home the message that violence is never the answer and that love should prevail in all relationships.
A significant highlight of the campaign was the presence of the Wives of Local Government Chairmen, themselves Chairpersons of the GBV Response Units established by Government in the 31 Local Government Areas. The team was led by the Wife of the Chairman of Uyo Local Government Area, Mrs. Akaninyene Uwemedimo Udo, who expressed gratitude to the Coordinator, Office of the First Lady for spearheading the initiative and urged residents of Akwa Ibom State to reject all forms of violence. Her call to action resonated deeply with the audience, emphasizing the collective responsibility to build a safer and more compassionate society.
The Chairman of the Ibom Plaza Management Committee, Mr. Edidiong Vincent also addressed the gathering, expressing his appreciation to the Akwa Ibom State Gender-Based Violence Management Committee and the Wives of Local Government Chairmen for their efforts in advocating against GBV. He pledged their Management’s full support and collaboration to ensure perpetrators are brought to justice.
Barr. Anietie Bassey, President of the Akwa Ibom State Male Advocates Against GBV, in his speech emphasized the importance of men taking a stand against GBV and promoting a culture of respect and equality. His message reinforced the need for collective action to eradicate violence in all its forms.
A representative from the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) also took the stand in shedding light on the dangers of child trafficking, molestation, and other forms of GBV. The address served as a stark reminder of the broader societal issues that require urgent attention and action.
The International Federation of Women Lawyers (FIDA), led by Chief Magistrate Helen Umana, further strengthened the campaign’s message. She encouraged the people of Akwa Ibom State to reject GBV and assured them of FIDA’s unwavering support in the fight for justice and equality.
The event concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by Barr. Emem Ette, Secretary of the Akwa Ibom State Gender-Based Violence Management Committee. She expressed heartfelt gratitude to all attendees, partners, and organizations for their support in making the campaign a resounding success.
Special recognition was given to the Coordinator of the Office of the First Lady of Akwa Ibom State, Lady Helen-Eno Obareki, whose efforts behind the scenes were instrumental to the event’s success. The presence of the Women Association of Local Government of Nigeria (WALGON), led by Mrs. Akaninyene Uwemedimo Udo, alongside other wives of local government chairmen, was also acknowledged.
In closing, the message was clear and unequivocal: The Akwa Ibom State Government stands firmly against gender-based violence and all forms of violence. Together, we can create a society where violence has no place, and every individual can thrive in safety and dignity.
