INTERNATIONAL DAY OF THE BOY CHILD 2023.

On the 16th of May, 2023, the Akwa State Gender-Based Violence Management Committee through its male advocates hosted its second edition of the Akwa Ibom State Boys’ conference in commemoration of the International Day of the Boy Child.

The event had in attendance young boys from different secondary schools, young men from different universities, and backgrounds, male advocates, the committee members, the commissioner for women affairs, NGOs, CSOs, and women supporters.

Setting the tone for the gathering, Dr Essien, reiterated the need for paying close attention and investing in the psychological, emotional, social, and mental needs of the boy child as if not groomed properly, might yield results we would not be proud of.

There were a series of activities to mark the day. A drama presentation by the Department of theater arts, University of Uyo, a lecture by Dr. Amanim Akpabio, and a panel discussion facilitated by Mr. Courage Mbon.

The young boys’ soon-to-be men gave their different views on things that could affect or already affect them as they grow and also directed questions on issues to the male advocates. These questions were appropriately answered and some young boys were taken in for personal counseling.

We are glad to see that there are young boys who have the zeal to be advocates against gender-based violence, and to be the voice for our young girls and women.
